The Riola di Vergato parish church was built in Bologna, Italy. The intention of the architect was to reform some of the architectural stereotypes of the Catholic church and to create a space were the altar, the choir and organ, and the baptistery coexist in a close relationship. Aalto gave his church an asymetrical overal shape in plan, and in section. The church is an asymmetrical basilica with asymmetrical vaulting. Initially, this design was conceived by Aalto to be constructed in wood. Finaly it was implemented in precast reinforced concrete elements. The structural frame consisted of 6 arches of varying section and dimensions prefabricated in a factory and assembled at site.
