A B S T R A C T The relationship between computation and design is part of the more general interelationship between formal languages and reality. This interelationship mirrors the status of our perception and the effort to express ourselves in creative ways. The paper outlines the core ideas of shape formalism as these were introduced by Stiny, and compares them with other formal systems, like the Turing machines, the production systems of Post, and the phrase structure grammars of Chomsky.
