A B S T R A C T It is presented a computational approach appropriate for the architectural studio. Rule schemata and rules are put into use for the generation of designs from scratch. Rule schemata and rules make design decisions clear, and allow students to connect them in logical chains and to reason about the results. In this way students can elaborate and test their design hypotheses. The outcome of the design process is not simply that some design solution emerges, but that some design hypothesis passes tests.
