The undermining of the distinction of the structural elements makes the forms look continuous,  and unified. This comes in contrast to the principles of classical architecture, where the structural elements can be enumerated. The  interior space of the Christian temple creates the sense of an inflated balloon that forms a seamless interior surface appropriate for decoration, or iconography.
